Upon the completion of their inspection, the judges gathered, voted, tallied those votes and have announced the winners of the 8K TV awards, including the coveted King of 8K TVs© award. Meta Tries to Buy Within: Hit with Antitrust Lawsuit by FTC

Image
Yesterday, the Federal Trade Commission took   Meta   to court,   filing an injunction   over the tech giant’s bid to buy the emerging virtual reality company Within, which created the fitness app Supernatural. The antitrust lawsuit, set in motion by Lina Khan, seeks to bar Meta from expanding its grasp on the virtual and augmented reality landscape under the assumption that the two companies may become competitors if they were not to merge.   In other news,  Samsung  has just announced that its new AI-powered Bespoke Washer and Dryer is available for pre-order via the company’s website. Best Buy’s New Digital-Based Concept Store — Is It the Future of Retail?

Image
Yesterday,   Best Buy   opened the first of its new  digital-based concept store , which is focused on creating a sleek and simplistic shopping experience while also saving floor space. It’s a 5,000-square-foot storefront that displays a selection of products in home audio and theater, cellphones, wearables and more electronic departments for customers to get a hands-on feel before deciding whether or not to purchase.  Once ready to buy, customers can scan the product’s QR code and employees — known as Blue Shirts — will fetch it from the back storage room and bring it out to complete the purchase. This simplistic and space-saving approach to shopping could wind up being a trend among the retail industry, especially if this concept by Best Buy proves to be successful. In other news, Shopify announced yesterday that it would be laying off 10 percent of its staff — roughly 1,000 employees —citing a lack of growth prospects. These layoffs will mostly apply to ...

Energy Management and the Role of Utilities

Image
Utilities are in a unique position, as their customers span multi-generations, income and education segments, renters,   homeowners , and individuals, in addition to families. In traditional, non-retail markets, which represent the majority of households, their relationship is long-term. They are a trusted advisor in their communities, even though many consumers only interact with their utility when moving to a new residence, paying a monthly bill or when an   outage   occurs.    Energy management is a key component of the connected home, and utilities are a key distribution point — 23 percent of U.S. broadband   households   that bought a   smart home  device in the past 12 months made the purchase due to an incentive, discount, or rebate from their energy provider.  New business models and  technology  provide opportunities to change the customer relationship and drive engagement and participation in utility programs tha...

How to Encourage Consumers to Buy By Educating Them

How we cook is entirely different from how our parents, grandparents, or even the average person cooked a couple of years ago.   Automated kitchens   are revolutionizing cooking and hold the power to close the   generational gap   pushing younger generations out of the kitchen. Autonomous kitchens optimize data and digitize personal preferences to produce cooking experiences catered to personal needs.  Roughly half of millennials cook dinner at home compared to 7 in 10 baby boomers. However, the proliferation of takeaway/delivery apps doesn’t deserve all the blame for the decrease in cooking. A significant  factor  contributing to the aversion to cooking is the lack of knowledge for preparation and the ability to complete it quickly. Tech companies should automize cooking products and smart home appliances to increase consumers’ knowledge and access to useful tech gadgets.  Autonomous products can increase foods’ quality by clarifying th...

Retailers Dish Out the Inside Scoop on Headphones

Retailers dish on the features and form factors that are informing buys in their respective markets Headphones in all their formats are  perennial best-sellers  for the holidays – and in fact, all year round. But what types are really making ears by the thousands perk up and pay attention, heading into 2020? Retailers who take this important category very seriously were canvassed for this article on which trends, designs, and use factors are wielding the most influence at the cash register. For the Southern California-based A/V specialty retailer Video and Audio Center, narrow scope of brands whose full lines are available is the master plan that has been successfully employed year in and year out. “Headphones are a very important category for us,” said Tom Campbell, the retailer’s chief technologist, and corporate director. A crucial strategy that informed the retailer’s brand selection has been ensuring that the most popular headphone and earphone style permutations and...

Peloton Makes Critical Changes Amid Steep Losses

Image
Peloton, the fitness tech company that burst to the forefront of consumer attention during the pandemic, is having a rough start to 2022. The company reported a whopping total of $439.4 million in net losses over the course of the latest fiscal reporting period. As a result, the company is cutting roughly 20 percent of its global corporate workforce, 2,800 jobs, and has   decided to onboard Barry McCarthy , the former CFO of Spotify, to replace co-founder John Foley as Peloton’s CEO. According to   Retail Dive , there has also been speculation concerning a   possible acquisition   from   Amazon , Nike,   Apple , or Lululemon. According to Global Data Managing Director Neil Saunders, the reasons behind Peloton’s fall from grace are simple. “Peloton incorrectly assumed that the demand created by the pandemic — as people switched away from gyms to home fitness — would continue to curve upward.” Instead, Peloton was impeded by a number of factors including...

Hands-on Review: Fieldsheer Adventure Heated Jacket

Image
When my editor asked me to review the   Fieldsheer Adventure Heated Jacket , my first thought was: What could go wrong by walking around with an electric heater attached to my chest? Would wearing the jacket in the rain somehow turn me into a piece of human bacon? Obviously, the engineers of this jacket had the foresight to create a product that wouldn’t accidentally electrocute the user, and, in truth, the Fieldsheer Adventure Heated Jacket is an amazing example of tech’s expansion into non-traditional industries. Unboxing Upon  unboxing , I was amazed by the discreetness of the heating coils. The material of the jacket retains all the flexibility of a traditional article of clothing, and if I hadn’t known better, I wouldn’t have suspected that there was anything special about it. The Fieldsheer Adventure Heated Jacket comes with an instruction manual, the Powersheer™ XL Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery, and a USB-C charging cable. The battery itself is the size of a large sm...

A Breath of Fresh Air With Outdoor Tech

Image
Entertaining the outdoors was certainly not invented by the   pandemic , but the way people now use their outside living spaces — often, and for a variety of situations — has evolved. Home prices are rising, and people are continuing to work from home in some capacity. Enjoying time together with family and friends, while also receiving the benefits of being out in nature, has never been more appreciated.    “Entertaining outside is not just a trend,” said David Pidgeon, president/CEO of Starpower. “It’s not like buying a pair of plaid pants and hoping that two years from now, plaid is still ‘in.’ Cooking and hosting outdoors is something that will continue to be enjoyable.”  What Consumers Want Outside   According to John Laing, director of  appliances  and outdoor at Nationwide Marketing Group, the term “outdoor appliances” applies to anything that helps a homeowner personalize their space for the best execution of cooking, cooking, serving, and over...

Netflix Announces It Will Include Ads in New Subscription Tier

Image
It’s the beginning of the week and I’m writing about Netflix again. I promise my   column   won’t always be about Netflix, but the streamer has just been too interesting lately.  This week, I’m talking about Netflix’s recent announcement that the streamer will start incorporating advertisements into a lower-priced subscription tier to help come back from a rocky first half of the year, including subscriber losses, stock plunges and layoffs. In  my last column , I wondered what steps the streamer would take to attempt to make a comeback, and it seems like advertising is one of their first moves. I don’t know if this step is going to achieve much. Think about it — why do most streaming subscribers, well, subscribe? According to a Statista survey back in 2020, 28 percent of subscribers said that having no commercials was a main reason behind their decision to subscribe. That wasn’t the highest cited reason — expanded access to content was — bu...

Walmart Announces New InHome Grocery Delivery Add On to Walmart+

Image
Today, Walmart   announced   its grocery delivery program InHome is now available as an add-on to Walmart+, the   retailer’s   membership service that allows for free shipping. Before, the two memberships were separate services, but they are now combined into one experience for an additional fee. InHome is different than standard delivery, as it allows customers to have groceries delivered, not just to their door, but into their home by a Walmart associate accessed via smart lock. Designed for those who work all day away from home with no one to received a door-based delivery, the service is sure to raise eyebrows among some consumers due to its more invasive delivery system. At the same time, this straight-to-the-fridge concept takes even more of the hassle out of grocery shopping. Today also marks the launch of several cities in which Walmart is launching the InHome service, such as Miami, Austin and San Francisco, so while the service is expanding, it is not widel...
